Guidelines for Crafting a Great Email Subject Line

If the subject line is not well-written, your email is likely to be deleted even before being read. Here are some tips which will help enhance your email open rates.

1. Go for clarity

Your subscribers are probably busy people who have many other emails competing for their attention. Since they don’t have time to waste, they would want to know from the onset what they should expect upon opening your email. Therefore, make sure your email subject line is clear about the contents of your email. When your recipients understand what your email contains, they are more likely to open it. Avoid the temptation of using clever, ambiguous lines which will only leave your recipients in suspense. For instance, a subject line such as ‘The New WordPress Template is Here!’ would be more effective than ‘It’s Finally Here!’

2. Avoid ‘spammy’ words

Using certain words in your email subject line is likely to trigger spam filters, even if your intention is not to spam recipients. As a result, your emails might end up in the spam folder instead of the inbox. Some of the words you need to avoid include the following:

  • Percent
  • Earn $
  • Call Now
  • Sale
  • 50% off
  • Cash
  • Guaranteed

  • Click Here

  • Free
  • Act Now
  • Millions

In addition, you need to avoid using too much punctuation or having your subject line in ALL CAPS.

3. Keep it short

Your subject line should not only be clear, but also as short as possible. Generally, it would be advisable to keep it at 50 characters or less. If it is too long, recipients might not be able to read the whole of it, especially when using mobile devices. Make sure the subject line includes verbs which encourage the recipients to take an action. Some of the words you could consider include launch, boost, discover, focus and improve.

4. Create a sense of urgency

One of the best ways of getting people to open your emails is by creating a sense of urgency. Give your subscribers a reason to want to open your email immediately. Make your email subject line exciting, thrilling and enticing. Examples of such subject lines include:

  • Everything at Half Price until Midnight
  • Purchase Two Shoes at the Price of One – Today Only

5. Test

When it comes to subject lines, there isn’t one solution which fits all. What works today might not be effective tomorrow. Therefore, it is very important to carry out regular tests with different subject formats. To find out what works best, you could split test your mailing list. Monitoring the opening rate will give you an idea of which format which is more effective. Continue to tweak it until you find the subject line which will work best with your recipients.
