Laptop Maintenance Tips

Laptop MaintenanceNowadays, more people are using laptops instead of desktop computers. However, laptops are very fragile and require proper maintenance in order to run effectively. Here are some tips which will help you extend the life of your laptop.

1. Placing the laptop

Hard drives run on the principle of magnetic flux. Exposure to any electrical field could have adverse effects on the hard disk and its contents. Therefore, you need to ensure that your laptop is always placed a good distance away from electrical appliances like microwave ovens which generate a powerful magnetic field.

2. Cleaning the screen

The screen is the most costly part of your laptop. Therefore, extreme caution is necessary when cleaning it. Use a soft and lint-free cloth to avoid scratching or leaving fibers on the screen. If you decide to use a cleaning spray, avoid harsh sprays which could change the color of your screen. Instead of spraying the cleaner directly on the screen, apply on a cloth first then use it to clean the screen. Alternatively, you could use vinegar or plain water to clean your screen.

3. Data backup

Laptops are gadgets which are vulnerable to hard disk crashes or even breakage. It is therefore very important to back up your data frequently.

4. Maintain your battery

Before using your laptop battery for the first time, make sure you charge it for the minimum time specified in the user manual. To keep your battery in good shape, you need to use it frequently. Avoid leaving it unused for a long time. When you are not using the laptop, remember to switch off the AC adapter. This will prevent overcharging. To extend your battery life, you need to make use of the ‘hibernation’ and ‘standby’ features which save power. In addition, it would be advisable to decrease the brightness of your screen.

If you don’t intend to use your laptop for a long period, make sure you remove the battery pack after discharging it completely. Store the battery in a cool dry place, away from dust, humidity and heat.

5. Use a laptop case

When you purchase a laptop, it is also advisable to invest in a good carrying case. The case needs to be soft on the inside and tough on the outside so as to absorb any shocks. In addition, it should be a comfortable fit for your laptop, as well as your laptop accessories.

6. Keep food away

Laptops are very sensitive gadgets. Therefore, avoid drinking and eating anywhere near your laptop. A small amount of fluid could cause a short circuit and damage your laptop.

7. Avoid hard booting

At times, you might want to switch off your laptop by holding the power button down. This is not advisable since it could result in loss of data. Use a hard reboot only when absolutely necessary, for example when Windows hangs.
