Guidelines for Running a Multi-Author WordPress Blog

wordpressMany people who start WordPress blogs are initially the sole content creators. However, as their blogs grow, they are likely to find it necessary to incorporate new writers. Though having additional contributors injects fresh ideas, it also makes it increasingly challenging to run a blog. Here are some tips which can help you manage a WordPress multi-author blog effectively.

1. Create a ‘Write for Us’ page

If you are accepting guest posts, you need to add a ‘Write for Us’ page on our blog. This page should include clear contributor guidelines which writers should adhere to. What kind of topics you are looking for? What is the minimum length for blog posts? What is your policy regarding linking, privacy and plagiarism? How can interested bloggers pitch their ideas?  Having this information on your page will enable you to attract submissions which are relevant to your blog.

2. Create a database of writers

A database is very important when dealing with multiple authors. First and foremost, this database will contain their contact information. Secondly, it will show the status of their assignments, whether they are pending or complete. In addition, the database will help you keep track of the payments made and those that are outstanding. You can use a simple spreadsheet to create such a database or opt for one of the many free tools available online.

3. Have a single editor

Having a single editor is one of the best ways of maintaining a consistent style in all your blog posts. You could either choose to do it yourself of hire someone for the editing job. However, as your site expands, it might be necessary to bring on board additional editors to handle different sections. These new editors should be encouraged to stick to the style which was set out from the onset.

4. Stay in touch with your writers

Frequent communication with your writers is very important. Keep them informed about any developments in the industry or changes in the contributor guidelines. Give prompt feedback for queries or draft articles which have been sent. Once an assignment is complete, make sure your writers get paid on time. Communicating constantly with your writers, especially the newbies, will keep them in check and enhance the quality of their work. However, avoid the temptation of flooding your writers’ inboxes with emails since this might only get them distracted. In addition, be sure to keep all your communication as professional as possible.

5. Showcase your writers

Every writer would love to get credit for his work. Therefore, you need to ensure that all blog posts have an author box or byline where writers can leave a short bio and a photo. Allow them to include at least one link to their own sites or blogs. You could also consider creating a dedicated page which lists all your contributors. Regular contributors could be given a higher title such as ‘Senior Author’ or ‘Expert Writer’. This kind of recognition will motivate your writers and encourage them to work even harder.
