Common Video Marketing Blunders

YouTube_logo_2013.svgVideo marketing is a marketing strategy which involves promoting a service, product or business using videos. This form of marketing has become increasingly popular over the recent years, with many businesses using it to promote their brands. Videos which are educational, informative and entertaining can yield very significant results for any business. However, here are some of the common video marketing blunders that should be avoided.

1. Long videos

Internet users have a very short attention span. Research has shown that people spend an average of three minutes watching a YouTube video. Therefore, if your video is too lengthy, viewers are likely to lose interest and move on to something else. Therefore, make sure your video is as brief and concise as possible. If you have lots of content to share, it would be advisable to produce a series of brief videos.

2. Boring videos

Videos should not only be short, but should also be interesting. Therefore, be sure to inject some fun and personality into your videos. If your videos are interesting enough, viewers are more likely to take the required action, whether it is joining your mailing list or buying a product. In addition, people will want to share your fun videos with others, thus giving you more exposure.

3. Failing to market effectively

Videos should be educational, inspirational or entertaining. However, this is not enough. The main aim of video marketing is to sell products or services. As people watch your video, they need to know exactly what you want them to do. Therefore, make sure your video contains a clear and specific call-to-action. While offering helpful information, you could ask your audience to buy a product or service, sign up for your mailing list or leave a comment. Remember to brand yourself by incorporating your logo, site URL or business name in the video.

4. Not editing videos properly

Don’t make the mistake of uploading your video before editing is complete. A video which is not edited properly will not only communicate ineffectively to your audience, but will also have a detrimental effect on the reputation of your brand or business. Therefore, take time to watch the video several times. It would also be advisable to share it with a few business associates and friends who might spot a detail that you overlooked in editing.

5. Not sharing the video

No matter how awesome your video is, it will not be effective if no one watches it. Therefore, to enhance online visibility, you need to share your videos with others through different channels. You can start by uploading them on video sharing sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Break, Metacafe and Dailymotion. In addition, you can share your videos through social networking sites such as Facebook, Google+, Pinterest and Twitter. It would also be advisable to share links to your videos in your email newsletters, sites and blogs. Encourage your audience to share the content with others in their networks. When viewers leave comments, be sure to respond in a timely and professional manner.

6. Being impatient

Many people embark on video marketing campaigns with zeal thinking that their videos will go viral instantly. In many cases, they are likely to end up disappointed and give up. Success in video marketing does not come overnight. Therefore, you need to be patient as you wait for results. If you consistently apply the tips outlined above, you will soon reap the fruits of your labor.
